Rhinoplasty is generally considered the dominion of young women in search of the standard of beauty, but it can also be done to those who have had head trauma or broken their noses, restoring their faces to what they expect their faces to look like.
The first purpose of this surgery is to make sure that the patient is able to breathe and reconstruct the nose: creating an aesthetically pleasing visage comes second. Your insurance may not cover the cosmetic portions of your rhinoplasty surgery, so if you are undergoing surgery during an emergency you may not get the nicest nose out of the deal.
What the doctors do
When the patient goes under the knife, the doctor will use pictures of their original noses as a guideline for what needs to be done, or as in the case of a crooked nose due to a break merely straighten it out the cartilage. In this case, the doctor might use a photo brought to him by the patient. The surgery will take less than three hours and unless he is going other reconstructive surgeries, the patient can expect to be home that afternoon.
The recovery period for any rhinoplasty is moderate. For about ten days following nose reshaping, the patient will wear a splint over his bandaged nose. When the bandages come off and the stars come out he can expect bruising around his eyes and swelling in the nose which will last for up to six weeks. His face will not look like its final product until after the swelling has receded fully.
Reconstructive rhinoplasty should be at least partially covered by insurance, but purely cosmetic rhinoplasty will not be. You should check with your cosmetic surgeon and your insurance company if you’re not sure if you’ll qualify for reimbursement.
A permanent fix
Rhinoplasty is a procedure that is effectively permanent, though occasionally accidents do happen. In these cases, it is possible to have a second rhinoplasty done to rework any of the reconstruction which may have gone away, or merely to go further if you feel your nose isn’t quite perfect.
Although it is generally associated with you girls, rhinoplasties are done to men and women of all ages every day all around the world. Despite being less common, it can help someone’s rebound after an accident – giving them the face they remembered having, or fix something as simple as blocks passageways due to a broken and twisted nose.
